Charleston tops division leader
CARY, N.C. — Charleston's Dan Antoniuk and Frankie Sanfilippo each scored against their former team as the Battery defeated the Carolina RailHawks, 2-1, Saturday night at WakeMed Stadium in front of 4,531.
The Battery (2-0-3, 9 points) moves to third in the USL First Division.
Former Battery forward Gavin Glinton scored the lone Carolina goal after coming on as a second-half substitute.
The game was a chippy affair with both teams seeing a player sent off — Amir Lowery for division-leading Carolina (3-2-1, 10) and John Wilson for the Battery.
Kickoff was delayed for an hour because of inclement weather, but when it did start, Charleston took advantage with a quick goal in the third minute. Antoniuk picked up possession in the box and lashed a low shot into the bottom right corner for a 1-0 lead.
In the 18th minute, the RailHawks were reduced to 10 men after midfielder Lowery caught Fuller with his forearm. The ensuing red card left Charleston with a man advantage.
Charleston made it 2-0 in the 54th minute after Tsuyoshi Yoshitake set the ball back to Sanfilippo at the edge of the box. Sanfilippo hit a first-time shot that flew into the top corner for a two-goal edge.
Glinton pulled one back for the RailHawks in the 73rd minute, and then the game became frantic as Wilson was ejected minutes later for a rash challenge on Carolina midfielder Brian Plotkin.
The Battery travels to the Montreal Impact on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
