Much has been written about options for Lowcountry moviegoers in this column.

From the independent films shown at The Terrace on James Island, the local filmmakers featured at the Olde Village Talking Picture House in North Charleston and even literal drives down memory lane courtesy of the Highway 21 Drive-In in Beaufort.

Film fan's choices are many.

Now you can add one more to the list.

Located right next to the Charleston Aquarium, The Terrace Hippodrome is a promising new venture, courtesy of Terrace Theater owner Mike Furlinger.

Boasting "Charleston's largest movie screen," former patrons of the old IMAX theater at the same location will recall that the screen is indeed the biggest in town. Even better, the Hippodrome has upgraded both the screen and sound quality.

Along with popcorn, soda and other traditional movie concessions, the Hippodrome will feature beer and wine, all available in the new theater's lavish and impressive lobby. Also, customers who present their parking tickets from the nearby garage will receive $2 off concessions.

For their grand opening at 7 p.m. today, the Hippodrome will present the new "Star Trek" movie and continue showing it for 30 straight hours, which means in addition to the typical matinee and evening showings, moviegoers can enjoy the new, sure-to-be blockbuster at 2:45 a.m. or even 8:15 a.m. Friday. Late-night food and beverage workers and early risers take note.

Also, one lucky person each night at the 7 p.m. showing of "Star Trek" Thursday - Sunday will win a free movie ticket for life at the Terrace Hippodrome.

All Lowcountry movie fans should take note and take time to enjoy what promises to be one of the most fun and exciting new theater experience in town.
