School plans shrimp fest

Archibald Rutledge Academy is holding the 33rd annual Lowcountry Shrimp Festival and Blessing of the Fleet 11 a.m.-5 p.m. May 2 at the Robert E. Ashley Boat Landing in McClellanville.

There will be a variety of food, including fresh, local shrimp, pit-cooked barbecue, kebabs and desserts. The festival includes entertainment from bands and dancers, arts and crafts, door prizes, a play area for the kids and the annual blessing of the shrimp boat fleet around 1 p.m.

-- A student-teacher volleyball game sponsored by student government was held in March. "Overall, the event was very successful. The teachers sure did work hard but couldn't quite hold the students," said high school English teacher and volleyball coach Patricia Kirby.

-- The ARA awards banquet for volleyball, basketball, cheerleading and archery was held March 19.

-- The lower school is planting a garden and will be happy to take any donations including seeds, gardening tools, etc.

-- The Coast Guard talked to the high school, and Kevin Kurtz, a children's book author and educator, visited the lower school. He is the author of "A Day in the Salt Marsh," illustrated by Consie Powell.

-- The six highest winners in the school's Science Fair went to the South Carolina Independent School Association State Science Fair on March 25. Kacie Williams, a freshman, won second place in the senior division of General Science.

-- Aaron Kelley was awarded first place in the North Greenville University Art Essay Contest.

-- The academy started its spring break with a cookout and Egg Drop Contest. Spring break ran April 3-14.
