Marcus Amaker, Preview editor for The Post and Courier, has been named Media Professional of the Year by the South Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.

Amaker, 32, has been involved with My Sister's House, a shelter for abused women and their children, for four years, helping to redesign its fliers and media materials and to promote its annual fundraiser.

"A lot of nonprofits' resources are limited," Amaker said. "And domestic violence awareness is something that I've always been passionate about, so I decided it was something I could lend my talents to."

In addition, Amaker volunteers as a Web site designer for the nonprofit Yo Art Project and for fellow artists.

He was nominated for the award by Elmire Raven, executive director of My Sister's House.

In informing Raven of the award, Vicki Borus, executive director of the coalition, said, Amaker was "the most obvious choice. His commitment to victims of domestic and sexual violence is impressive, and I am delighted to be able to honor him in this way."
