Citadel's Nelson named SoCon player of week
For first time in a month and just the fifth time this season, someone other than Stephen Curry of Davidson is the Southern Conference men's basketball player of the week.
That someone is senior center Demetrius Nelson of The Citadel.
Nelson, from John's Island, led the team in scoring in wins over Appalachian State (74-72) and Western Carolina (75-66) last week. He averaged 25.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and made 63 percent of his field goal attempts. The player of the week is selected by a vote of the league's basketball sports information directors.
Nelson tallied a career-high 29 points in The Citadel's win at Western Carolina Saturday. Earlier in the week he posted a team-high 22 points at Appalachian State. Nelson was one rebound away from a double-double in both games.
