Design meeting on tap for upper Johns Island
The public is invited to take part in a Nov. 5 presentation on creating a master plan for the intersection of Maybank Highway and River Road.
The I'On Group, the Kerr Family of Johns Island, Charleston County and the city of Charleston are hosting a week-long 'design charrette,' which includes the upcoming meeting. The first showing was last Wednesday After gathering ideas, designers will come up with a proposal. That will be shown at the closing presentation 6:30-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Berkeley Electric Co-Op, 3351 Maybank Highway.
The design meeting will produce a vision and plan for the 368-acre property that lies just acrodd the Stono River Bridge along Maybank Highway and includes waterfront, wetlands, marsh and 84 acres of developable land. Formerly part of the Seven Oaks Plantation, the property has been in the Kerr family since the 1930s.
The Kerr's land is located in an area of Johns Island that has been the subject of planning studies by the city of Charleston and Charleston County to address the need to improve transportation and protect the area's rural character. The family hopes to re-create a sense of arrival onto Johns Island and establish a mixed use "gathering place" that will serve as a model to guide future growth in the region.
Dover, Kohl & Partners will be the planning team leading the charrette. For more information contact Alys Campaigne at alys@iongroup.com or (843) 971-1662.
