Witness: Woman's body dumped in road
A resident of Bedon Road near Walterboro looked outside just after 10 p.m., and what she saw chilled her.
A car drove up, a man lifted a body from the vehicle and placed it in the road. Then, he sped off.
She called the police, and Colleton County sheriff's officers found Brenda E. Bailey, 47, dead. An autopsy is being done to determine the cause of death, Sheriff George Malone said .
Less than 24 hours later, Haskell C. Frasier III of Walterboro was arrested and charged with the murder of Bailey, Malone said.
Frasier, 34, was taken into custody at 8 p.m. Saturday during a traffic stop near Walter and Hampton streets.
Frasier also was charged with burglary of the victim's residence and larceny of her vehicle, which was recovered near the crime scene, Malone said.
Evidence from the scene and witness statements led to the warrant for Frasier, who will be incarcerated in the Colleton County Detention Center. His arraignment is scheduled for this morning.
"She was a nice person," said Bailey's neighbor, Annie Mae Siders. "She was always going to work and coming back home."
Siders said nothing like this had happened in the neighborhood before.
Bailey lived at 755 Bedon Road, yards from where her body was found. She is listed as living at that address with Bobby Bailey.
Brenda Bailey worked at Advance Auto Parts on Robertson Boulevard for more than 10 years, a fellow employee said.
Another neighbor, Myrtis Gadson, said she did not know Bailey well, but her heart went out to the family. "Whether there's children or not, she's a part of someone's family," Gadson said.
