GOOSE CREEK — A 10-year-old boy died Sunday after swimming in an apartment complex pool and inhaling water, authorities said.

Several witnesses told police that Johnny Jackson was in the shallow end of the Branchwood Apartments pool about noon, an incident report said. Afterward, he went to his apartment in the complex and took a nap because he was sleepy, the report said.

When someone checked on him, water was coming out of his nose, and he was not breathing well, the report said. He was taken to Trident Hospital, where he died.

It was the boy's first time swimming, Berkeley County Coroner Glenn Rhoad said. He said the boy's lungs were filled with water and he died of asphyxiation. Rhoad said there was nothing suspicious about the death.
