FOLLY BEACH — Visitors will see a much-improved Edwin S. Taylor Fishing Pier when it reopens Sunday. The pier has been closed for more than five months for an extensive renovation project, much of which has focused on the buildings at the pier's entrance.

Ray Ely of Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission said the total renovation project cost $1.22 million and was done in two phases. The pier was able to remain open during Phase I, which took place in the fall of 2006.

Pier manager Kerry Hanson said he wished the project could have been completed in three months rather than five months to reduce the impact on pier anglers, but that wasn't feasible.

"I'm sure all our regulars will be back," Hanson said, noting that Sunday will be Customer Appreciation Day and there will be free parking and free fishing. He said there will be drawings for 10 fishing passes, valued at $130 each. The restaurant, Locklear's Beach City Grill, also will reopen.
