JUPITER, Fla. — The St. Louis Cardinals strengthened their thin rotation on Thursday, reaching a preliminary agreement with pitcher Kyle Lohse on a $4.25 million, one-year contract.

General manager John Mozeliak said the 29-year-old Lohse was flying in from California and would undergo a physical today at the team's spring training site. The exam is unlikely to include pitching because Lohse threw a 75-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday.

Lohse can earn an additional $500,000 in performance bonuses. He was 9-12 with a 4.62 ERA with the Reds and Phillies last year, throwing 192 2/3 innings. He has made 30 or more starts five of the last six seasons.

Rays

Brian Anderson's bid to resume his major league career is over. An MRI revealed the Tampa Bay left-hander suffered a career-ending elbow injury during Wednesday's game against the Yankees.

The 35-year-old pitcher, who missed the past two seasons after undergoing Tommy John surgery, tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow for the third time in his career.

Padres

Starter Greg Maddux took a line drive off his thigh and had to leave the game against the Cubs.

The ball, hit by Derrek Lee in the first inning, left a bruise on Maddux's left thigh. Maddux recovered and threw Lee out, but left the game after only two innings. he Padres listed him as "day-to-day."

Red Sox

The Red Sox placed Curt Schilling on the 60-day disabled list as he continues to rehabilitate his right shoulder.
