Names And Games
The North-South All-Star Basketball Games will be held Saturday at North Myrtle Beach High School and the Lowcountry will be well represented.
Bishop England's Joseph Tecklenburg, Summerville's Marcus Morris and West Ashley's Kevin Bruce are on the South boys' team.
West Ashley's Ronnie DuPre and Goose Creek's Brad Dobbels are coaches for the South squad.
Cross standout Kia Gilliard, Fort Dorchester's Karleen Paulin, Beaufort's Jessica Polite and Bluffton's Saudi Collier were selected to the girls' South team.
Stroman honored
Morgan Stroman, who led Lower Richland to its third straight Class AAAA state championship, has been named the Gatorade South Carolina Girls Basketball Player of the Year.
The junior averaged 14.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.0 steals, 2.7 assists and 2.4 blocks per game. Stroman, who was named the player of the year by the state coaches' association, has helped the Diamond Hornets reel off 44 consecutive wins.
Stroman has a 3.61-grade point average and is a member of the student council.
Fast start
Northwood Academy baseball player Brandon Stoots is off to an impressive start.
Stoots collected 13 hits in his first 15 at-bats for the Chargers. That's an .867 batting average. He collected nine runs, three doubles and eight RBIs.
Special K
One junior varsity baseball player to keep an eye on is First Baptist of Mount Pleasant freshman Ben Atkins.
The 5-11, 165-pound right-hander pitched a two-hit shutout against Porter-Gaud on Tuesday night, striking out 18 batters in the seven-inning game won by the Warriors, 2-0. His catcher was his brother, Joey.
First Baptist will field a varsity team for the first time during the 2009 season.
Big games
There are numerous boys' soccer games this weekend, and a few to keep an eye on include Pinewood Prep at Bishop England at 7 p.m. today. It's a game that features two state championships.
Also, Alabama state power Hoover is in town this weekend. Wando hosts Hoover at 7 p.m. today, and Bishop England hosts the Bucs at 3 p.m. Saturday.
