Rick Nelson is The Post and Courier's managing editor. A military brat, he was born in San Diego but grew up primarily in South Carolina and Florida. He graduated from Summerville High School and attended the University of South Carolina. He joined the newspaper in 1984 and covered a range of metro beats as a reporter, including courts, cops and North Charleston government, and served in several newsroom editing roles. He also was an award-winning sportswriter, with a focus on College of Charleston athletics, and was named the 2003 South Carolina Sportswriter of the Year. He is married with four grown children.
