Tony Bartelme is The Post and Courier's special projects reporter. He joined the paper in 1990, shortly after Hurricane Hugo slammed into Charleston. His in-depth reporting has exposed a variety of complex community problems, from mercury poisoning to insurance boondoggles to questionable police shootings. An author of four non-fiction books, his work has garnered the highest awards in journalism, including the Gerald Loeb for outstanding business writing, the Sigma Delta Chi award, and numerous other national journalism honors. He was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in feature writing in 2010 and a Pulitzer finalist in 2013 for explanatory reporting. In 2010, he was awarded a Harvard Nieman Fellowship. He holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from Northwestern University.
