Saving the natural Lowcountry

PLC Tract, Hampton County, 224 acres, protected by Lowcountry Open Land Trust Young longleaf pine are being grown on this tract near Hampton. Several significant areas of this property are dedicated to producing longleaf pine (Pinus palustris), a native species which is part of a unique and diverse ecosystem that once occupied over 90,000,000 acres of coastal plains from southeastern Virginia south to central Florida and west to the timber stands of east Texas. Currently the longleaf pine ecosystem occupies less than three percent of its historic range in this nation. Longleaf pines can grow to up to 120 feet tall and live for hundreds of years.
