Church theft

Casey Toth/Staff Father Jeffrey Kendall explains the difference between old-growth and new-growth wood on the second floor of St. James Catholic Church's school house in Catholic Hil on Wednesday. The school house was a pivotal meeting place for the black congregation. It was used to educate the community's youth until the 1970s when it was deemed unfit for use. In recent months, Father Kendall has led renovation efforts for the historic building. In the early hours of Saturday morning June 29, a trailer full of heart pine flooring from the school house was stolen. The priceless, old-growth wood was planned to be reused for the construction of an altar.
