South Carolina Stingrays rookie goalie Philipp Grubauer will miss tonight’s game with the Greenville Road Warrior with a hand injury.
Grubauer, who is third in the ECHL with a 2.22 goals against average, has been battling a hand injury for the past two weeks. Grubauer will be re-evaluated by team doctors Saturday morning.
“Philipp definitely won’t go tonight, but could play Saturday against Cincinnati,” said Stingrays coach Spencer Carbery. “He’s been fighting with this injury for a while and he needs a night off.”
Back-up goalie Billy Sauer will start tonight for the Stingrays. Sauer is 2-2-1 with a 3.12 goals against average and a .901 save percentage since joining the Stingrays back in January. In his last start, Sauer made 43 saves against Greenville last Saturday night in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Road Warriors.
Local resident John Havrilak will serve as the team’s emergency back-up goalie until Grubauer is back in the lineup.
Grubauer, who is 23-13-5 with a .918 save percentage, has been named the ECHL goalie of the month and the league’s rookie of the month this season.
