Clemson receiver Craig accused of domestic violence
CLEMSON – Clemson receiver Joe Craig was involved in a charge of criminal domestic violence after an incident early Sunday morning. He was served with an arrest warrant Wednesday. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney dismissed Craig from the football team Wednesday night.
The Post and Courier obtained a copy of Craig’s arrest warrant Thursday. Clemson University police officers were dispatched to a “fight call” at a university-area apartment at 3:30 a.m. on Sunday where Whitney Fountain, the mother of Craig’s son and a member of the women’s track team, accused Craig of striking her.
According to the arrest warrant, Craig is accused of shoving Fountain, leaving a “red mark below her neck.” Fountain and her sister retaliated against Craig, who reported injuries to his face and neck.
Fountain was also charged with domestic violence.
According to the incident report from Sunday morning, Craig told officers Fountain started the incident and he “pushed her away to get away from the situation.”
It was not the first violent incident Craig was involved in at Clemson.
Craig was suspended for the first three games of the 2011 season for his involvement in a fight with a different female track athlete last spring. Craig was not arrested in that case.
Craig caught three passes for 18 yards last season.
