There was such a fine line between the two Tigers last year at Auburn. Some bruised ribs here, a misfired pass there. Kyle Parker got hurt. Cam Newton got his Heisman Trophy campaign going and Auburn got away with an overtime victory on the way to the national championship.
Here we go again.
The experts, including Warren Peper, think Clemson will win today at Death Valley.
Logic points to Auburn.
Ex-Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach on his national radio show Friday within the same few minutes said he was "disappointed" in and "optimistic" about Clemson's new Chad Morris- inspired offense.
Clemson cut it way too close against Wofford.
But did some big things right when little things were not working.
"Last year, we were bunting all over the field," part-time youth baseball coach Dabo Swinney said of his football team this week. "This year, we're hitting home runs."
What to think?
This: Clemson better come out with the same very impressive old-school toughness it showed last year in Auburn and sustain that approach all afternoon. With a few home runs.
Auburn at Clemson
Andre Ellington rushed for 140 yards against Auburn last season, more than anyone else against the national champs.
Warren Peper pick: Clemson, 27-24
Gene Sapakoff pick: Auburn, 21-20
Navy at South Carolina
The Gamecocks worked on the lost art of tackling this week in practice, and it better pay off against a program with six straight regular season wins dating to a 76-35 romp over East Carolina.
Peper pick: USC, 28-14
Sapakoff pick: USC, 49-28
CSU at Jacksonville
First Central Florida, then Florida State and now Charleston Southern goes back to Florida to face the Dolphins. At least they don't have to drive clear to Miami.
Peper pick: CSU, 21-17
Sapakoff pick: CSU, 24-21
S.C. State at Indiana
Toughest pick of the day. The Bulldogs are quite capable of downing a down Indiana team.
Peper pick: Indiana, 24-17
Sapakoff pick: Indiana, 27-25
Oklahoma at Florida State
This is an exceptionally fast, smart Oklahoma team with a smidge more seasoning than the Seminoles. Florida State needs special teams help to win.
Peper pick: Florida State, 31-28
Sapakoff pick: Oklahoma, 24-20
West Virginia at Maryland
Warning, Clemson fans: A win here and Maryland likely is 5-0 when hosting the Tigers on Oct. 15.
Peper pick: Maryland, 27-20
Sapakoff pick: West Virginia, 34-31
Virginia at North Carolina
More interceptions (4) than TD passes (3) for Bryn Renner, but the Tar Heels' quarterback is 2-0.
Peper pick: UNC, 24-10
Sapakoff pick: UNC, 17-0
Tennessee at Florida
Should be a fun quarterback shootout, Tyler Bray vs. John Brantley.
Peper pick: Florida, 30-17
Sapakoff pick: Florida, 31-21
Coastal Carolina at Georgia
Just what Chanticleers head coach David Bennett said he feared before the season started: Bulldogs 0-2 and simmering.
Peper pick: Georgia, 40-14
Sapakoff pick: Georgia, 42-17
Mississippi at Vanderbilt
The one game SEC officials don't want you to see.
Peper pick: Mississippi, 24-20
Sapakoff pick: Mississippi, 17-16
Last week: Peper 8-2, Sapakoff 7-3.
Season: Sapakoff 15-5, Peper 14-6.
