Stratford High School students have created a digital history of Moncks Corner, which will launch in time for the town's 125th anniversary celebration over the Fourth of July weekend.
Junior Nicholas Baxter and seniors Dylan Campbell, Araceli Cruz and Konner Smith developed the website in teacher Michael Eason's Web Page Design and Development II class.
The project is a partnership between the Berkeley County School District, the town of Moncks Corner, and Google, which provided training and mentors for the students.
Although Stratford is in Goose Creek, it is the only Berkeley County school offering the upper-level web design class, Eason said, so students there completed the project.
Campbell said he put numerous hours into the project, but he learned a lot. He plans to pursue a career in computer design, he said.
The project includes text and photographs on the town's history, and the students have begun creating three-dimensional images of the town's most iconic buildings using Google's free SketchUp software.
When the site launches in July, it will contain models of the old train depot on Behrman Street and the old Berkeley High School on Main Street, Eason said. Students next year will create images of other town buildings.
And the three-dimensional images will be available to people who visit the Google Earth site. They will be able to zoom in on the three-dimensional models of the buildings, Eason said.
Eric Wages, Google's S.C. Data Center operations manager, said the company got involved in the project because "we want to hire students like these in the future."
He also said the project brings "texture to history."
Lilyn Hester, a spokeswoman for Google, said the company regularly gives to local organizations. But it's not the one-time, "big check" kind of giving, she said. "They like to roll up their sleeves and get deeper into a community."
Moncks Corner Mayor William Peagler said the site will provide "a good access point" to learn about the town.
The town will combine its anniversary and Fourth of July celebrations this year, he said. The celebrations will include a street dance, parade, the dedication of a monument in Unity Park and fireworks.
