A Charleston-based radio station owner is extending its reach down the South Carolina coast.
Apex Broadcasting Inc. has agreed to buy WLHH-104.9 FM in the Hilton Head Island area in a deal valued at $682,500, according to filings with the Federal Communications Commission.
The seller is Low Country Radio LLC.
Apex also is acquiring the rights to sell airtime on and otherwise operate WLHH under a separate agreement. The financial terms of that deal with Low Country Radio weren't disclosed.
WLHH is a oldies-format station nicknamed "The Surf."
The CEO of Hilton Head-based Low Country Radio is former Charleston radio personality C.J. Jones. He was part of the "CJ & Buzz" morning show in the 1970s and 1980s on WTMA-1250 and on WCSC-1390.
Apex Broadcasting is headquartered on Clements Ferry Road and is owned by Dean Pearce.
It operates five local FM stations: Kickin' 92.5; Mix 95.9; 99.3 The Box; Star 99.7; and 101.7 Chuck FM. Apex also has several stations in the Florida panhandle serving the Destin and Fort Walton Beach markets.
