FLORENCE -- A report from the South Carolina Highway Patrol says a Florence County Sheriff's deputy was driving his cruiser at 126 mph when it crashed and he was killed last year.
The final report from the patrol accident investigation team released Thursday finds that 23-year-old Joseph Antwine was driving too fast for conditions. Antwine and a fellow deputy were on their way to provide backup for another officer Nov. 22 when the accident happened.
Antwine was wearing a seat belt when the cruiser left the road, hit a utility pole, turned over and struck a tree. He died a week later at a hospital. The second deputy in the car was hurt, but was released from the hospital a few days after the wreck.
