Former U.S. House Speaker and 2012 GOP presidential primary contender Newt Gingrich will be in Charleston on a book tour.

He is scheduled to appear at Barnes & Noble on Sam Rittenberg Boulevard at 6 p.m. Jan. 28, said Shawn Glen, assistant store manager.

Gingrich will sign copies of “Breakout: Pioneers of the Future, Prison Guards of the Past, and the Epic Battle That Will Decide America’s Fate.” The book, released in November, decries the stifling effect of government bureaucracy and vested interests on technological innovation.

“Every potential breakthrough has to get past a host of individuals and institutions whose power and comfort depend on the status quo.”

Two years ago, Gingrich rejuvenated his bid for the Oval Office with a decisive primary victory in South Carolina over Republican frontrunner Mitt Romney, who went on to become the eventual party nominee.

During his appearance here, Gingrich will be joined by his wife, Callista Gingrich, who is touring for her children’s book, “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” which is the third installment of the New York Times bestselling series.

Newt Gingrich, who is currently a host of the CNN show “Crossfire,” represented the Sixth Congressional District of Georgia in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1978 to 1999, where he served as Speaker from 1995 to 1999.

He is known as the architect of the “Contract with America,” a set of proposals that led the Republican Party to victory in 1994 by capturing the majority in the U.S. House for the first time in 40 years.
