John's wife had a very difficult second pregnancy and survived less than two weeks after her daughter's birth. Now John is struggling to raise both daughters on his own.

He is a good father and does his best to try to keep a roof over their heads. Unfortunately, he suffers from a degenerative disease and has had multiple surgeries. In great pain, he works whenever his back allows, but his medical condition has cost him several jobs. Six months ago he was earning a good salary at a terrific job that he loved. His back issues cost him that job too.

John is constantly searching for work that will not cause stress on his back. He is willing to work but just doesn't know if it is possible. Reluctantly, he has applied for disability. In the meantime, his only income is his daughter's survivor benefit, which is not even enough to pay the rent.

Your generous donation to The Post and Courier's Good Cheer Fund can help a local agency provide help and support for John and his family as he strives to make a life for himself and his two young children.

Since 1927, contributions to The Post and Courier's Good Cheer Fund have helped the less fortunate in the Lowcountry during the holiday season. The six charitable organizations sharing the funds collected are the Association for the Blind, Salvation Army, Star Gospel Mission, Carolina Youth Development Center, Coastal Catholic Charities and the Lowcountry Food Bank. Every cent of the money goes directly to the agencies, as there are no administrative costs involved.

Send tax-deductible contributions to the Good Cheer Fund, c/o The Post and Courier, 134 Columbus St., Charleston, SC 29403-4800. Donations also may be made in person or online at www.goodcheerfund.com.

To be listed in the paper by Christmas Day, contributions must be received in our office by noon on Monday, Dec. 23.
