A suspect surrendered to authorities Tuesday after Sunday's hit-and-run wreck that killed an autistic West Ashley man.
Daniel Shirley, 18, of Hollywood, is charged with leaving the scene of an accident with personal injury and death, Charleston County sheriff's deputies said.
Shirley surrendered to sheriff's deputies around 11 a.m. in connection with the death of 22-year-old Forrest Carlton, Maj. Eric Watson said. Carlton was autistic, according to his obituary.
Carlton was struck around 3 a.m. Sunday on Ashley River Road between Plainview Drive and Parsonage Road. Detectives in an arrest affidavit said Shirley struck Carlton with his black Dodge Charger and left without helping the injured man, deputies said. Carlton later died at Medical University Hospital, deputies said.
On Monday, a tip from a citizen led investigators to Shirley's vehicle parked at the Middleton Cove Apartments, 2247 Ashley River Road, deputies said.
A bail hearing was scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Watson said.
