The Charleston Police Department will join the county’s Consolidated 911 Dispatch Center on Tuesday morning.
The move means that dispatchers in the building on Palmetto Commerce Parkway will handle emergency calls for the department.
“Having the Charleston Police Department join the existing agencies enhances the sharing of information and resources so that the public receives the best possible service,” Center Director Jim Lake said in a statement Monday.
Citizens will continue to dial 911 for police emergencies. The number for police calls that are not emergencies will be 743-7200. The number for the department’s administrative offices is 577-7434.
“Other than a change in the telephone number for police responses, those in the City of Charleston shouldn’t notice any difference in the quality of service or response times,” Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen said.
