Cohen took center stage again Wednesday, this time in the school’s gymnasium to sign a national letter of intent to play basketball for the Baylor Bears, on the first day of the NCAA’s early signing period that runs through Nov. 20.
Cohen is one of the most versatile student-athletes in the state. She’ll play in the North-South All-Star Volleyball Games next weekend.
She carries a 3.7 GPA taking a course schedule that includes AP classes. And the 6-0 senior loves drama when she’s on the stage.
But she’s glad the drama and anxiety that comes with college recruiting is finally over.
“Now I don’t have to worry about this during basketball,” Cohen said. “I’m ready for the season. I’ve worked really hard. Some people don’t take their senior season seriously. That’s not going to happen with me. There are still some goals I want to accomplish.”
Cohen, who was The Post and Courier’s female athlete of the year for the 2012-13 academic year, has accomplished more than most student-athletes.
She averaged 26.7 points, 13 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 3.5 shots blocked per game last season and will begin her final high school season with 1,803 career points.
Cohen selected Baylor over South Carolina, Miami, Louisville and Georgia.
“I really like all the schools, including South Carolina and coach (Dawn) Staley,” Cohen said. “But I think Baylor, overall, is the better opportunity. It offers basketball and academics. I plan on majoring in business, and its Entrepreneurship program is ranked second in the country.
“Academics are very important to me and my family. It’s a private school with tough admission standards.”
Northwood Academy star Amber Campbell, who was Cohen’s teammate in AAU basketball, will sign with Wake Forest on Friday.
Last season, Campbell became just the ninth girls’ basketball player in state history to score 3,000 career points.
Swimming is becoming extremely competitive in the Lowcountry, and Wednesday’s signings reflect it. Wando’s Megan Kingsley signed with Georgia, Bishop England’s Matt Adams signed with Alabama, Ashley Ridge’s Micah Bohon signed with Tennessee, and Academic Magnet’s James Koval signed with West Virginia.
Also on Wednesday, Ashley Ridge softball standout Aubrey Rabun signed with South Carolina.
