A blaze that engulfed a Summerville home late Wednesday night has been deemed suspicious, Old Fort firefighters said.
An alarm and a neighbor’s call to 911 alerted firefighters to a house fire on Lakeview Drive shortly after 11 p.m., Fire Chief Ed Genthert said. The home resides in the Ashborough subdivision off Dorchester Road.
According to Genthert, neighbors reported that a loud “boom” noise echoed throughout the area as the fire erupted.
Arriving units saw heavy flames and smoke burst through the home’s upper windows. The fire took about an hour to bring under control, Genthert said.
No one was home when the flames ignited, according to Genthert, and no injuries were reported.
Genthert said the size of the fire and reports from neighbors led authorities to deem the blaze suspicious. The area has had problems in the past, he said.
The fire’s cause has not yet been determined, Genthert said.
The incident remains under investigation.
