A man was taken to the hospital Sunday morning after authorities found him conscious but disoriented near Drum Island beneath the Ravenel Bridge.
Authorities first received the call about 8:10 a.m. that a man was walking in and out of the water on Drum Island, a tiny slice of land beneath the Ravenel Bridge on the Columbus Street side of the Cooper River, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard and the North Charleston Fire Boat responded and spoke with the man, who was conscious but disoriented. He denied jumping from the bridge, according to the Coast Guard.
He was taken by boat to the Sea Breeze Marina where Charleston County EMS waited to take him to the Medical University Hospital for evaluation. The incident was over about 9 a.m.
Correction: An earlier version of this story identified the wrong fire boat. It was North Charleston’s fire boat that responded, according to North Charleston Fire Department spokeswoman Bianca Bourbeau.
