WALTERBORO — Colleton County’s football team had crippled itself with turnovers and penalties in its two previous games before Friday’s meeting with old nemesis Summerville.
Correcting only half the problem didn’t lead to a better outcome for the Cougars this week, as the Green Wave rolled to a 56-21 victory at Cougar Stadium, making the Cougars pay for a rash of untimely turnovers.
Colleton County seemed to correct its penalty problem, getting flagged only five times for 40 yards after racking up a combined 26 penalties for more than 200 yards in its previous two games.
The Green Wave, up 21-7 when the Cougars began playing hot potato with the football, turned all three turnovers into touchdowns.
The first was a fumble by Colleton County’s Diquan Crosby, giving Summerville possession with a short field at the Cougars’ 37. Chris Felder scored eight plays later to make it 28-7 with 3:54 to play in the first half.
Summerville defensive back Daniel Smith stepped in front of Ramon Hall’s pass intended for Jami Sanders on Colleton County’s next series, returning the interception 31 yards for a score to put the Green Wave up 35-7.
Chad Mathis intercepted Hall after the ball went off Linzell Williams’ fingertips to end the Cougars’ next drive, giving the Green Wave possession again. Felder ran in from 3 yards out five plays later to make it 42-7.
Despite losing running back Jacerie Ponder for the game to a leg injury, the Green Wave still gashed Colleton County’s defense on the ground. Eleven different ball carriers rushed for seven touchdowns and 307 yards in the game.
