A fatal wreck on Interstate 26 near exit 199 for North Main Street in Summerville temporarily shut down the eastbound lanes just after 1:30 p.m. Friday, according to a SCDOT traffic alert.
S.C. Highway Patrol said the one-car wreck resulted in an entrapment on the westbound lanes at mile marker 198.
A 2012 GMC sport utility vehicle went off the left side of the road into the median, where it struck several trees.
The driver, who is from Tennessee, was transported by air to the Medical University Hospital. A passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. Both were wearing seat belts.
The accident is under investigation.
