The following candidates are running for mayor of Mount Pleasant in the Nov. 5 election. One candidate, Carl Carroll Jr., did not respond by the deadline.
Family: Wife, Kathy; two children.
Education: B.A. Columbia College, Columbia, Mo; MSA Central Michigan University.
Employment: Owner of Bustos Travel Service and Mount Pleasant Flight Training; retired U.S. Army officer.
Political history: Mount Pleasant Town councilman (2000-2009).
Why I am qualified: “I have more experience with nine years on town council and more varied experience having been on both the CARTA board and as a ex-officio Water Commissioner on Mount Pleasant Waterworks than any other candidate. I gained experience working on projects such as permit allocation, the Waterfront Park, the War Memorial Committee, acquisition of Shem Creek land and establishment of the Shem Creek overlay district.”
Goals: “We need to open town government to our residents by decreasing the number of executive sessions; encourage economic development while not overwhelming our schools and roads.”

George A. Freeman
Family: Single; one daughter.
Education: B.S. Math South Carolina State University, M.S. Management American University.
Occupation: Real estate agent; former computer software development project manager.

Why I’m qualified: “Education, work experience and approximately 20-year service with CHATS Transportation Plan Advisory Group, East Cooper Planning Council, the Berkeley Charleston Dorchester Council of Governments, Charleston County Transportation Advisory Board and Greenbelt Advisory board.”
Goals if elected: “Recruit more product producing companies; recruit businesses with higher paying jobs; create a downtown business district near Towne Centre; and prepare a road grid system transportation plan including alternative modes of transportation.”

Why I’m qualified: “With 30 years of public service — Marine, councilman, and volunteer MPRD coach — and decades of successfully operating small businesses, I offer the leadership best needed to protect and grow Mount Pleasant’s economy.”
Goals if elected: “Implement my ‘Bring Business to Mount Pleasant’ plan by making business easier to do in the town; maintain our great quality of life by promoting intelligent economic growth; practice fiscal responsibility by eliminating waste and reducing taxes and fees.”
