Reading, PA. — Forward Jordan Owens recorded two assists and goaltender Jeff Jakaitis made 27 saves to help the South Carolina Stingrays defeat the Reading Royals, 3-2, at Santander Arena on Sunday night.
Royals forward Stanislav Galiev broke open the scoring early in the contest, slipping a shot past Jakaitis at 3:07 from defensemen Michal Cajkovsky and Patrick Wey.
The Stingrays (1-0-0-1) responded with a power-play tally from forward Scott Campbell at 5:37 with help from forwards Peter Boyd and Owens.
Stingrays forward Marc Hagle made it 2-1 with his first professional goal beating Royals netminder Brandon Anderson (19 saves on 22 shots) at 8:02. Forwards Justin Maylan and Igor Gongalsky added assists.
Forward Chris Langkow buried the eventual game-winning marker shorthanded, completing a 2-on-1 rush with Owens at 9:21 of the final period.
The Royals (1-1-0-0) pulled to within one with four seconds to play on a tally from forward David Marshall, but ran out of time.
The Stingrays finished the night 1-for-3 on the power play while the Royals went 0-for-3.
South Carolina wraps up a three-game season-opening road trip Friday against in-state rival Greenville at 7 p.m. at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
On Saturday, the Stingrays will face Greenville on opening night at the North Charleston Coliseum. Hall of Fame players such as Jason Fitzsimmons, Dave Seitz, Brett Marietti, Rick Vaive, Rob Concannon and Matt Scherer along with fan favorites Johann Kroll, Trevor Johnson and more return to the Coliseum ice for a pregame Alumni Game at 2 p.m. Admissions is free with purchase of an opening night ticket. The world-famous Zooperstars! perform during the intermissions and the first 5,000 fans receive a 2013-14 magnet schedule.
