A moped crashed into the back of a Charleston County school bus on Rivers Avenue on Friday morning, sending the moped driver to the hospital.

The wreck happened around 8 a.m. near Berlin’s Restaurant Supply in North Charleston.

The school bus was en route to pick up students and did not have any passengers on board, said Jason Sakran, spokesman for Charleston County schools.

North Charleston Deputy Police Chief Scott Deckard said that the bus was stopped with its yellow caution lights activated. That’s when a man on a moped collided into the back of the bus, he said.

The moped’s driver was transported to Medical University Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the wreck, Deckard said.

The man was issued a citation for following too closely, according to police.

The bus’ driver was not injured.

A back-up bus was dispatched to pick up students who were waiting to be driven to school, Sakran said.
