The Charleston Atlantic Presbytery is launching a new church in the rapidly growing Cane Bay area in Summerville.

The first worship service will be held at 10 a.m. today at Cane Bay Middle School.

It will be a multigenera-tional church with what church leaders call a casually traditional worship service and a focus on community outreach and mission activities.

With female clergy and elders serving along with males, an open Communion, children’s church and traditional worship that includes liturgy and a range of music, the new church will be a good match for the resi- dents of the growing area, the Rev. Michael Lee Fitze said.

When the new church is chartered, Cane Bay will be the 49th church in the presbytery, the part of the Presbyterian Church (USA) that covers most of the Lowcountry.

The presbytery has purchased property on Cane Bay Boulevard adjacent to a planned YMCA for a permanent site.
