Charleston is one of the seven most haunted cities in the United States, says Family Circle Magazine. Despite its Southern charm, the magazine says, Charleston also is “creepy.”
In announcing the seven, Family Circle noted each city’s “thrills” and “chills.”
Charleston’s thrills are said to include tours of a dungeon, old cemeteries and a haunted jail. The magazine also mentions an encounter with John Wilkes Booth’s father at Dock Street Theatre and unexplained mysteries on the USS Yorktown.
Those brave enough to withstand unexplained chills brought on by roaming spirits can stay on the 10th floor of the Francis Marion Hotel. Or, they might spend a night or two in the old Citadel, now an Embassy Suites, where souls of former cadets and officers roam.
Other haunted cities named by Family Circle are Gettysburg; Salem, Mass.; Portland; San Francisco; Tombstone, Ariz.; and New Orleans.
