A woman escaped with only minor injuries after driving her car off the James Island Creek Bridge Wednesday morning.
The wreck happened about 2 a.m. on Harborview Road near North Shore Drive, Charleston police spokesman Charles Francis said. The vehicle damaged the bridge’s eastern railing, plunged from the bridge and sank into the creek.
Francis said the woman climbed out of the water with minor injuries. She was not intoxicated and no one else was in the vehicle, he said.
The car was removed from the creek and the road was reopened about 5:30 a.m. with the help of the Charleston Police Dive Team, Harbor Patrol, James Island Fire Department, Charleston County EMS and dive team members from both North Charleston police and the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.
