A college football all-star game, to be called the Medal of Honor Bowl, is set to be played at The Citadel’s Johnson Hagood Stadium next January.

What: Medal of Honor Bowl

When: Jan. 11, 2014

Where: Johnson Hagood Stadium, The Citadel

Officials will announce the game at a news conference Wednesday at the stadium.

The game is scheduled for Jan. 11, 2014, and will pit senior players from across the country, in an all-star format similar to that of the Senior Bowl, which is played in Mobile, Ala.

Organizers hope to draw players from top leagues, including the SEC and the ACC.

The Medal of Honor Bowl is led by the same group that tried to bring the Legends Bowl, pitting teams from the Sun Belt and Conference USA, to Charleston.

That effort ran into resistance from the NCAA, which prohibits events at “pre-determined sites” in South Carolina because of the Confederate battle flag controversy.

College football all-star games feature players who have used up their college eligibility, so the games do not need approval from the NCAA’s bowl committee.

Other all-star games in 2012 included the Senior Bowl; the East-West Shrine Game in St. Petersburg, Fla.; and the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl in Los Angeles.
