SUMMERVILLE — West Ashley quarterback Pedro Manigault rushed for 117 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Wildcats to a 20-10 victory over Ashley Ridge on Friday.
It was West Ashley’s first win against Ashley Ridge in four tries. The Wildcats are 3-0. Ashley Ridge fell to 0-3.
The only scoring in the first quarter was a 20-yard field goal by the Swamp Foxes’ Matt Gable.
West Ashley jumped ahead in the second quarter when Manigault scored on a 22-yard TD run. Less than a minute later, Wildcat senior linebacker Donte Patterson stepped in front of a Chandler Avenel pass and returned it 42 yards to put West Ashley up 14-3.
Manigault added a 23-yard TD run in the fourth quarter to give West Ashley a 20-3 lead.
“Pedro stayed within himself and read the defense well tonight,” said Wildcat coach Bobby Marion. “He has developed into a strong leader on this team.”
Ashley Ridge scored with 22 seconds left in the game when Dashaun Santiago caught a tipped pass from Avenel for a 35-yard TD.
West Ashley’s Marquize Jenkins finished with 55 yards on seven carries. Ashley Ridge was led by junior Tyler Garland with 106 yards on the ground on 12 carries. The Swamp Foxes completed only 8 of 24 passes on the night for 95 yards.
“We have to do a better job on our defensive front. We also have to improve our passing game,” Marion said. The Wildcats only attempted three passes, completing none and throwing one interception.
“We’re excited to be 3-0,” said Marion. “But we know there’s a long way to go and a tough conference schedule ahead of us.”
West Ashley will play host Colleton County next Friday, while Ashley Ridge will travel to Stratford.
