A 66-year-old Richland County woman drowned in a boating accident near Georgetown Tuesday.
Here’s what happened, according to the Coast Guard.
James and Delores Jones, both 66, were on a 16-foot recreational boat in Winyah Bay when the anchor line got caught in the propeller. The husband tried to raise the propeller to free the line, and the boat became unstable and overturned.
Neither was wearing a life jacket. The woman started drifting away. The husband couldn’t swim and climbed on top of the boat to flag down passing boats. The woman was no longer in sight when rescuers arrived.
A boat crew from Georgetown and a helicopter crew from Charleston searched for the missing woman. A tow-boat crew found her body in the water about a mile from the accident site.
The couple listed their address as Hopkins, which is near Columbia.
