College of Charleston freshman Matthew Mahle won the 54th annual Berkeley Invitational held over the weekend at the Berkeley Country Club at Exeter Plantation.
Mahle birdied the 18th hole in his final round to shoot a 12-under 204 and capture the tournament title by a single stroke over Ross Thomson of Charleston Southern.
Ten Cougars competed in the tournament with five players claiming top-10 finishes. Senior and 2012 champion Alex Ellis finished tied for third, sophomore Josh Lorenzetti finished sixth and senior Parker Allen and freshman William Rainey tied for eighth.
“It’s a great tournament and a great win for Matt,” Cougars golf coach Mark McEntire said. “After Alex won the tournament last year, it was special to have Matt come in and follow in his footsteps.”
The Cougars will compete in their first tournament of the fall season this weekend when they travel to the Navy Fall Classic on Sept. 7-8 at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Club in Annapolis, Md.
College of Charleston (3-0) will make its home debut at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Charleston Southern (0-3).
The Cougars, who have won either the league regular season or tournament title for the 12 consecutive seasons, will unveil their 2012 Southern Conference championship and NCAA tournament banners.
College of Charleston won the Georgia Tech Invitational on Sunday with a 3-0 sweep of the host Yellow Jackets of the ACC. Junior Sloane White was named the tournament MVP.
Citadel volleyball fans are invited to attend the team’s annual “Meet the Bulldogs” event at 6 p.m. Tuesday at McAlister Field House. The event is free and open to the public.
Festivities begin with an intrasquad scrimmage, with the winner determined in the best of three sets to 15 points. Following the scrimmage, Citadel fans will have the opportunity to get autographs and have a meet-and-greet session with members of the 2013 squad.
