For the first time, visitors to Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum can tour the laundry room on the USS Yorktown staring Friday, the state-owned visitor attraction said.
The World War II-era carrier’s laundry detail handled about 360 loads of clothes per day.
The new display includes the machines used to wash, dry and iron uniforms, and the presses used for cuffs and pants pleats.
The exhibit was made possible in part by a grant from the Society for Industrial Archeology out of the University of Michigan. The money funded a renovation that took about three months.
The laundry room is on the fourth deck of the Yorktown, which is on the Mount Pleasant waterfront.
