The owner of The Post and Courier is asking the city of Charleston to abandon an unused public street near the newspaper’s headquarters.
The request is tied to a plan by Evening Post Industries to redevelop about 12 acres it owns in the area around Meeting, King, Columbus and Line streets.
The company filed a petition with the Charleston County Court of Common Pleas last week asking the city to officially close and abandon Carlson Court.
The request also asks that the 0.09-acre property be deeded to Evening Post and to an adjoining property owner, Hagerman Court LLC, in accordance with state law.
In its petition, Evening Post said the road near Line and Meeting has not been used in years, has restricted access and “is not in a condition to be travelled upon.” It also said the future development of the property “will be a general and permanent benefit to the citizens and residents of the surrounding area.”
John Hagerty of Hagerman Court LLC said he supports the request.
Evening Post announced plans last year to redevelop its property on the peninsula into a mix of residential and commercial uses as part of long-range project called Courier Square.
The company picked two firms this year to help develop the first phase. Greystar Real Estate Partners and Lincoln Harris will build out a vacant, 2.8-acre site at Meeting and Columbus streets into apartments, commercial space and a parking deck.
