WOODRUFF, S.C. -- Spartanburg County deputies say they have arrested the husband of a woman killed while riding her bicycle because he didn’t come home to take care of the couple’s eight children.
Investigators say no one came to 37-year-old Ruth Mathews door after she was killed Monday night, and it took them a while to find her husband, 47-year-old Rajy Mathews, who was working in Houston.
Deputies say Rajy Mathews told them he couldn’t come home for several days, but the children were being watched by a pastor. When deputies went to the home Friday, they found the children, ranging in age from 1 to 16, by themselves.
Rajy Mathews is charged with eight counts of child neglect. He remains in jail. Deputies did not know if he had a lawyer.
