A woman’s boyfriend is charged with killing her, Charleston police said Saturday.
Her body was found in a unit at The Palms apartments off Orange Grove Road, police said.
The Charleston County coroner identified the woman as Kathy Hawkins.
The suspect, identified as David Mark Reagan, 55, was denied bail in an appearance before a magistrate on Saturday, court officials said.
Authorities said the victim was found dead at about 12:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Neighbors said Hawkins lived at the apartment where her body was discovered.
“She was a very nice lady. Very friendly neighbor,” said Gwen Watson.
An autopsy conducted on Friday showed Hawkins had internal injuries from physical trauma that caused her death, police said.
A spokeswoman for the coroner’s office had no further information on the case Saturday night.
Watson said she had seen the woman with her boyfriend at the apartment complex.
“It’s very sad. I feel very bad for the family,” she said.
At the door to Hawkins’ upstairs apartment was a ceramic dog with a bone in its mouth next to new phone books in a plastic bag. There was a tricycle and a child’s picnic table on the back porch.
No one answered the door at the apartment where Hawkins’ body was found in building 410.
Watson said Hawkins had a daughter who was about nine-years-old, and a brown dog.
“I didn’t hear anything,” she said.
Watson’s fiancee, Henry Johnson, said Hawkins had lived next door for about two years. He said she was a waitress.
“It’s hard, man,” Johnson said.
According to Charleston County court records, Reagan was indicted on a charge of criminal domestic violence and pled guilty in 2012.
