Palmetto Christian Academy opened the high school football season with a 62-49 victory at Porter-Gaud’s John Singleton Stadium on Tuesday night.
Palmetto Christian quarterback J.T. Waters rolled up 604 total yards as the Eagles made a statement after posting a 7-4 record last fall.
Waters rushed for 308 yards and six touchdowns while passing for 296 yards and two scores.
Ryan Roe scored on a plunge to stake PCA to a 6-0 lead. But Porter-Gaud went on a 21-0 run to take control at the end of the first quarter.
Waters scored on runs of 2 and 22 yards to rally his team for a 22-21 lead. He broke off a 76-yard TD run to make it 30-28 and threw a 40-yard TD pass to Andrew Johnson in the final seconds of the first half to make it 36-28.
Porter-Gaud quarterback Steven Duncan was also impressive. He passed for 297 yards and five TDs. Foster Moe had three catches for more than 200 yards and three scores.
On Friday night, Palmetto Christian plays Garrett Tech and Porter-Gaud faces Northwood Academy in the Sertoma Classic at Johnson Hagood Stadium.
Porter-Gaud, coming off a 5-6 record last fall, hosts Ben Lippen in the second game of the regular season next week, while Palmetto Christian is at Williamsburg Academy.
