S.C. Highway Patrol troopers patrolling Interstate 95 Saturday night caught a woman accused of abducting her two children from their home in Maine.
Troopers had been told to be on the look out for a 1999 Nissan Quest with a New York tag in connection with the abduction of a 7-year-old girl and 6-year-old boy from their grandparents’ home.
At 10:12 p.m. troopers found the van parked at the rest area at the 47 mile marker in Colleton County, Trooper Bridget Wyant said. They arrested Bethmarie N. Retamozza, 34, of Maine and charged her with being a fugitive of justice, Wyant said.
Retamozza is the children’s mother but does not have custody.
She will be held at the Colleton County Detention Center without bail until she is taken into custody by the FBI.
The children will be turned over to the Colleton County Department of Social Services, Wyant said.
