Showtime grabbed the first-day lead Thursday in the Edisto Marina Billfish Tournament and also moved into first place for the South Carolina Governor’s Cup Billfishing Series.
The boat, which fishes out of Toler’s Cove Marina in Mount Pleasant, is owned by Fred Hardwick and captained by Wink Doerzbaher. Showtime released a blue marlin and a sailfish, tallying 800 points.
That was good enough to move Showtime ahead of series leader Sportin’ Life, which fished Thursday but did not earn any release points. Sportin’ Life had a 4,610-4,375 lead over Showtime going into the Edisto event, the final tournament in the 2013 Governor’s Cup.
Both boats still have one day of fishing remaining in the tournament that continues through Saturday. Boats can fish two out of three days, captain’s choice. Twenty-four of the 30 boats entered in the tournament fished Thursday.
Second place at Edisto belongs to Rascal, a Georgetown boat owned by Norman Pulliam, which released a blue marlin. Trick’em, owned by Curtis Whittaker, also released a blue marlin, but Rascal holds second for releasing its fish first.
Anglers released five blue marlin and seven sailfish Thursday.
In the non-billfish categories, Benchmark has the top dolphin at 35.8 pounds; Big Kahuna leads the wahoo division with a 44.3-pound catch; and Summer Girl has the top tuna, 15.8 pounds.
