In his race to get to a vote, newly elected Rep. Mark Sanford caused a stir wearing gym shorts on the House of Representatives floor.
The South Carolina Republican apparently was working out and did not learn the House had moved up a Wednesday evening series of Defense Department votes, according to Roll Call’s Heard on the Hill blog.
Dressed in shorts, a T-shirt and athletic shoes, Sanford arrived in the Speaker’s Lobby, and the blog reported, “For the most part, he stayed sheepishly in one corner of the long hallway, hovering near one of the chamber doorways to monitor when he needed to run out onto the floor and cast his votes and trying to ignore giggling reporters.”
He borrowed a blazer when entering the chamber to vote.
A reporter for the blog asked Sanford if he thought he had enough time for an exercise run before having to report to the chamber. “I think that’s a fair assessment,” it quoted Sanford as replying.
