GREENSBORO, N.C. – Well, here would be one way to stunt the hype train steaming into Clemson.
Of course, the preseason all-ACC squad as selected by media voters Monday at the league kickoff includes quarterback Tajh Boyd, wide receiver Sammy Watkins and kicker Chandler Catanzaro. None are big surprises.
However, that’s it. That’s the list. Preseason ACC Championship pick Clemson has half as many representatives as rival Florida State, which landed six Seminoles on the squad, and one less than North Carolina’s four.
Miami, the ACC Coastal favorite, has two each on the team, along with Duke and Wake Forest.
Boyd, the 2012 ACC Player of the Year predicted Sunday to retain the 2013 award, did find his name on more ballot than any other player, getting the nod from 59 of 65 media voters. Miami running back Duke Johnson fielded 58 votes and Watkins got 57, and remember, there are two spots each for runners and receivers against just one quarterback.
No Brandon Thomas at left tackle, and not a single defensive player for the Tigers fielding preseason love. UNC’s James Hurst and Virginia’s Morgan Moses were the tackles selected, and Duke cornerback Ross Cockrell led all defensive players with 48 votes.
Seminoles running back James Wilder Jr. and Demon Deacons receiver Michael Campanaro snared spots at competitive positions. Florida State had two offensive linemen and three defenders on the team.
