GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Greensboro Grasshoppers jumped out to an early 3-1 lead and held on to defeat the Charleston RiverDogs, 4-3, Wednesday night in South Atlantic League action at NewBridge Bank Park.
The RiverDogs fell to 12-11 in the second half and 51-40 overall. The Grasshoppers improved to 13-12 and 46-48 overall.
Greensboro got on the board first as Colin Moran belted a solo homer in the first inning for the early 1-0 lead. Charleston answered with a run of its own on a RBI groundout by Aaron Gates in the top half of the second inning that scored Jake Cave.
The RiverDogs struck for two runs in the third inning to tie the game.
Charleston was led offensively by Danny Oh, Cito Culver and Angelo Gumbs, who each had a pair of singles.
Greensboro starter Austin Brice (6-6) picked up the win, going 5.1 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits, along with four strikeouts and three walks. Frankie Reed earned his 12th save of the season.
RiverDogs starter Daniel Camarena (2-4) took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits, with two strikeouts and no walks.
Game 2 of the three-game series is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday. Charleston sends right-hander Cesar Vargas (3-3, 3.21 ERA) to the mound as Greensboro counters with left-hander Chad James (1-2, 5.51 ERA).
